Breakfast with the Birds - May 5 Pepperell Conservation Commission On Saturday, May 5 at 6:30 a.m. the Pepperell Conservation Commission will host "Breakfast with the Birds" at the Heald Street Orchard in Pepperell. The event is free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and come to enjoy coffee and breakfast goodies and a stroll through the Orchard with bird experts and enthusiasts. All ages welcome, children must be supervised. The Heald Street Orchard is located between Maple Street and Heald Pond; meet at the upper parking lot near the water tower. National Drug Take Back Initiative - Saturday, April 28, 10;00am-2:00pm Pepperell Police Department The Pepperell Police Department will be accepting any unused, expired prescription drugs, ointments, topical, patches, liquids (please be sure the caps are secure), etc. Pet medication is accepted as well. Please remove any identifying information from prescriptions. Over-the-counter vitamins, supplements, cold/cough remedies, allergy meds, pain relievers, patches, etc. Drop off is anonymous, for yourself or for friends or family members. The Friends of Pepperell Recreation is seeking your gently used bikes for our annual fundraiser sale! In our continued efforts to be "green", we are hosting our 6th Used Bike Sale. Each year, residents have been amazingly wonderful in donating their gently used bikes, trikes, scooters and ride-ons. On average we start our Sale with about 250 bikes!!!! All unsold bikes at end of sale are donated to Worcester Earn A Bike. Our pay it forward objective keeps the bikes local and ensures area families can purchase a gently used bike for their kids & grandkids at affordable prices, the Earn-A-Bike program benefits, and keeps these bikes out of the landfills! Beginning Birding at the Pepperell Senior Center - 8:00am, Saturday April 28 Are you wishing you had a bit more knowledge about the birds coming to your feeder or in your neighborhood? Are you interested in learning about some of the great locations to see birds in our area? "Beginning Birding" is designed to provide a great in-depth review of the main aspects of this growing and interesting activity. This program will focus on bird identification, family characteristics, bird behavior, optics and field guides. Join Jack Lash, former chief ecologist for DCR, an experienced birder and naturalist, and a member of Mass Audubon for over 20 years, as we take an early morning bird stroll. We will find as many different species of birds as possible, learn some of the calls they make and chat about WHY species are in the habitat we find them. Bird walk begins at 8:00 AM at the Pepperell Senior Center, followed by a discussion including some spring ecology slides and "top ten" spring destinations for birding. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Pepperell Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. The Carnival is Returning to Pepperell - April 26-29 Pepperell 4th of July Committee The Carnival is coming to Town! to benefit the Pepperell 4th of July Committee from Thursday, April 26 - Sunday, April 29 on the Town Field. Thursday and Friday the carnival will operate from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Saturday 1:00 to 10:00 and Sunday from 1:00p.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will be bracelets available for a flat fee on Thursday from 6:00-10:00 and on Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00. The carnival is a major fundraiser for Pepperell's 4th of July Committee and proceeds go toward Pepperell's best in the region Indpendence Day celebration. Pepperell Green Up - Saturday, April 14 - Sunday, April 22 Citizens of Pepperell, Pepperell Boy and Girl Scout Troops, Lawrence Library, Pepperell Highway Division The 16th annual clean up of roadside litter and trash on public lands in Pepperell begins Saturday, April 14 and continues through Sunday, April 22. A map of Pepperell and a sign-up list are posted in the Lawrence Library the first week in April. Stop by to sign up and pick up some orange garbage bags. Public lands to pick up include roadsides, sidewalks, parking lots, schools, the rail trail, conservation lands, hiking trails and other areas. Anyone can participate – individuals, families, scout groups, organizations, businesses, etc, and everyone's efforts make a difference! Filled bags can be left curbside. The Pepperell Highway Department will pick up the bags along the roadside beginning Monday April 23. Thank you for participating and for Taking Pride in Pepperell. PHOA Versatility Challenge Series - Saturday, April 21 Pepperell Horse Owners Association The Pepperell Horse Owners Association invites everyone to the 2012 Versatility Challenge Series at Ten Broeck Farm, 1 Old Farm Lane, Pepperell. Ride or walk your horse through obstacles such as bridges, barrels, gates, bells ringing, tarps and more! Lots of fun and encourages bonding, trust, communication between horse and rider. For more information, contact the Pepperell Garden Club at (978) 433-5751. 12th Annual Farm Day - Saturday, April 14 Nashoba Conservation Trust Jon and Anne Kaiser of Twin Valley Farm, once again, invite young and old alike, to visit their farm on Brookline Street on Saturday, April 14 from 11:00am to 2:00pm. This annual event has taken place since 2001 when the Kaiser family, working with the Town of Pepperell and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, placed an Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) on their property. The APR Program places a permanent deed restriction on the property that prevents any negative effect on its agricultural viability. Invitation to Participate in the NMRSD Superintendent Search Focus Groups - March 5-7 North Middlesex Regional School District The search for a new Superintendent of Schools of the North Middlesex Regional School District is underway. The NMRSD School Committee has hired the New England School Development Council (NESDEC) to assist with the search process. As part of the process, NESDEC will be conducting a series of focus groups on March 5-7, 2012. Focus groups are an important part of the process because they are designed to obtain the input of teachers, support staff, administrators, school committee members, parents and community members about the attributes, experience and knowledge they believe the new superintendent should possess. The focus groups will also provide an opportunity for participants to identify immediate tasks on which the new superintendent should concentrate.
