Breakfast with the Birds - May 5 Pepperell Conservation Commission On Saturday, May 5 at 6:30 a.m. the Pepperell Conservation Commission will host "Breakfast with the Birds" at the Heald Street Orchard in Pepperell. The event is free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and come to enjoy coffee and breakfast goodies and a stroll through the Orchard with bird experts and enthusiasts. All ages welcome, children must be supervised. The Heald Street Orchard is located between Maple Street and Heald Pond; meet at the upper parking lot near the water tower. National Drug Take Back Initiative - Saturday, April 28, 10;00am-2:00pm Pepperell Police Department The Pepperell Police Department will be accepting any unused, expired prescription drugs, ointments, topical, patches, liquids (please be sure the caps are secure), etc. Pet medication is accepted as well. Please remove any identifying information from prescriptions. Over-the-counter vitamins, supplements, cold/cough remedies, allergy meds, pain relievers, patches, etc. Drop off is anonymous, for yourself or for friends or family members. The drop off is Saturday, April 28 from 10:00am - 2:00pm at the Pepperell Public Safety Building at 59 Main St. If you have questions, please contact the Pepperell Police Department at 978-433-2424. 6th Annual Used Bike Sale & 5th Annual Town-Wide Yard Sale - April 28 Friends of Pepperell The Friends of Pepperell will be holding its 6th Annual Used Bike Sale, Saturday, April 28, 2012. The Friends of Pepperell Recreation is seeking your gently used bikes for our annual fundraiser sale! In our continued efforts to be "green", we are hosting our 6th Used Bike Sale. Each year, residents have been amazingly wonderful in donating their gently used bikes, trikes, scooters and ride-ons. On average we start our Sale with about 250 bikes!!!! All unsold bikes at end of sale are donated to Worcester Earn A Bike. Our pay it forward objective keeps the bikes local and ensures area families can purchase a gently used bike for their kids & grandkids at affordable prices, the Earn-A-Bike program benefits, and keeps these bikes out of the landfills! And, we are able to do great things for Pepperell! Donate your outgrown, no longer used bikes, scooters and bicycle accessories NOW! Beginning Birding at the Pepperell Senior Center - 8:00am, Saturday April 28 Are you wishing you had a bit more knowledge about the birds coming to your feeder or in your neighborhood? Are you interested in learning about some of the great locations to see birds in our area? "Beginning Birding" is designed to provide a great in-depth review of the main aspects of this growing and interesting activity. This program will focus on bird identification, family characteristics, bird behavior, optics and field guides. Join Jack Lash, former chief ecologist for DCR, an experienced birder and naturalist, and a member of Mass Audubon for over 20 years, as we take an early morning bird stroll. We will find as many different species of birds as possible, learn some of the calls they make and chat about WHY species are in the habitat we find them. Bird walk begins at 8:00 AM at the Pepperell Senior Center, followed by a discussion including some spring ecology slides and "top ten" spring destinations for birding. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Pepperell Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Electronics Drive - April 28 Townsend Common during Earth Day, to benefit Project Graduation Project Graduation will hold an Electronics Drive on April 28, 2012, from 10-3 P.M. during Earth Day on the Townsend Common. Household items (stove, refrigerator, washer, dryer, hot water tank) are $15 and for an additional $15, Project Graduation volunteers will pick up your item. To benefit NM Project Graduation Spring Fair at Squannacook in Ashby - April 28 Ashby Elementary School Ashby Elementary School will hold a Spring Fair for Children and Adults at Squannacook Elementary School (right behind the Townsend police station on rt 13) on Saturday, April 28 from 9:00am-3:00pm. Bring the family in for lunch, kid games, raffles, a silent auction table, good buys and a lot of fun. Get great deals from local crafters and check out the party vendors. The Mass. Methodist Church Thrift Shop - through April 28 Pepperell Methodist Church The Pepperell Methodist Church on Chapel Street behind the Dunkin Donuts will be holding a $4 bag sale on Saturdays from 9:00am-1:00pm through April 28. Please contact the church regarding leaving donations during other times. The Carnival is Returning to Pepperell - April 26-29 Pepperell 4th of July Committee The Carnival is coming to Town! to benefit the Pepperell 4th of July Committee from Thursday, April 26 - Sunday, April 29 on the Town Field. Thursday and Friday the carnival will operate from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Saturday 1:00 to 10:00 and Sunday from 1:00p.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will be bracelets available for a flat fee on Thursday from 6:00-10:00 and on Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00. The carnival is a major fundraiser for Pepperell's 4th of July Committee and proceeds go toward Pepperell's best in the region Indpendence Day celebration. More information about the carnival will be available closer to the dates. Pepperell Green Up - Saturday, April 14 - Sunday, April 22 Citizens of Pepperell, Pepperell Boy and Girl Scout Troops, Lawrence Library, Pepperell Highway Division The 16th annual clean up of roadside litter and trash on public lands in Pepperell begins Saturday, April 14 and continues through Sunday, April 22. A map of Pepperell and a sign-up list are posted in the Lawrence Library the first week in April. Stop by to sign up and pick up some orange garbage bags. Public lands to pick up include roadsides, sidewalks, parking lots, schools, the rail trail, conservation lands, hiking trails and other areas. Anyone can participate – individuals, families, scout groups, organizations, businesses, etc, and everyone's efforts make a difference! Filled bags can be left curbside. The Pepperell Highway Department will pick up the bags along the roadside beginning Monday April 23. Thank you for participating and for Taking Pride in Pepperell. PHOA Versatility Challenge Series - Saturday, April 21 Pepperell Horse Owners Association The Pepperell Horse Owners Association invites everyone to the 2012 Versatility Challenge Series at Ten Broeck Farm, 1 Old Farm Lane, Pepperell. Ride or walk your horse through obstacles such as bridges, barrels, gates, bells ringing, tarps and more! Lots of fun and encourages bonding, trust, communication between horse and rider. This is a timed event, compete at your choice of level, ribbons awarded. Spectators welcome at no charge, no dogs please. Sign up begins at 10:30 a.m., runs begin at noon. The Pepperell Horse Owners Association is working to preserve and encourage equine activities in the Town of Pepperell and lends support to surrounding towns. Art in Bloom: a celebration of fine art and fresh flowers - April 19-21 at Lawrence Library Pepperell Garden Club and Lawrence Library Perhaps you've seen the beautiful floral arrangements at the annual Art in Bloom show at the MFA - well, now you can see the magic of pairing fresh flowers and fine art right here at the Lawrence Library! Six teams from the Pepperell Garden Club have been busy throughout the winter learning to create memorable flower arrangements. Each team will present an arrangement inspired by a piece of art from the library collection. Meet the Garden Club floral designers at the opening reception on Thursday, April 19th, from 4 - 8 PM. For more information, contact the Pepperell Garden Club at (978) 433-5751. 12th Annual Farm Day - Saturday, April 14 Nashoba Conservation Trust Jon and Anne Kaiser of Twin Valley Farm, once again, invite young and old alike, to visit their farm on Brookline Street on Saturday, April 14 from 11:00am to 2:00pm. This annual event has taken place since 2001 when the Kaiser family, working with the Town of Pepperell and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, placed an Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) on their property. The APR Program places a permanent deed restriction on the property that prevents any negative effect on its agricultural viability. The children enjoy patting and feeding the horses and cows. The Nashoba Conservation Trust sponsors this free, annual event. "Gardening 101: Learn the basics of gardening" at the Pepperell Garden Club - Wed., April 11 Pepperell Garden Club The Pepperell Garden Club will discuss "Gardening 101: Learn the basics of gardening" at its April meeting. The meeting will be Wednesday, April 11 at 7:00 PM at the Pepperell Senior Center. There is a $5 guest fee, $2 for seniors, or you can join the Garden Club for just $15. Refreshments will be served. Annual Rabies Clinic - April 7 at Jersey Street Fire Station Sponsored by Pepperell Veterinary Hospital The Pepperell Veterinary Hospital, in conjuction with the Pepperell Board of Health and Nashoba Associated Boards of Health, will hold a rabies clinic on Saturday, April 7, 2012 from 9:00am - 12:00 noon at the Jersey Street Fire Station. Dogs and cats will be accepted (it is HIGHLY recommended that cats arrive in a crate). Rabies vaccines are $15. CASH required. Anyone from a Nashoba Board of Health member town is welcome to attend clinic. PLEASE have Rabies Certificate with you, if applicable Rabies tags will read "Pepperell Veterinary Hospital" The Town Clerk will be available to issue dog licenses and renewals. St Patricks Day Events - March 17 Friends of Lawrence Library In the Art Gallery: Squanicook Colonial Quilt Guild Opening Reception, Saturday, March 17th from 10:00 AM - 12:00 Noon. The show will run through noon on April 13th. Irish Need Not Apply Saturday, March 17th at 2:00 PM join historian, Christopher Daley, for a lecture on the Irish in Boston. This one-hour presentation will show how the Irish emigrated to Massachusetts, starting as a trickle of indentured servants, to a small Catholic migration, to a huge influx of immigrants during the Great Potato Famine. It will show how they banded together to survive and assimilate into American culture, and how they rose from the lower economic strata to positions of influence and power in Boston and throughout Massachusetts. Mardi Gras Breakfast at NMRHS - March 10 New Orleans Service Learning Organization The Mardi Gras Breakfast, to be held on March 10, from 9:00am - 12:30pm at the North Middlesex Regional High School, is one of the Major fundraising events for the New Orleans Service Learning Organization. The group commits an entire week to service around the city of New Orleans and all year long around Townsend, Pepperell and Ashby and surrounding towns.. The Mardi Gras Breakfast is a French toast breakfast and it will take place in the cafe B and C of the high school. Entrance tickets for the breakfast are $5. There will also be a craft/vendor sale along with the breakfast. There are 25 tables available at a charge of $20 for crafters/vendors to set up. Invitation to Participate in the NMRSD Superintendent Search Focus Groups - March 5-7 North Middlesex Regional School District The search for a new Superintendent of Schools of the North Middlesex Regional School District is underway. The NMRSD School Committee has hired the New England School Development Council (NESDEC) to assist with the search process. As part of the process, NESDEC will be conducting a series of focus groups on March 5-7, 2012. Focus groups are an important part of the process because they are designed to obtain the input of teachers, support staff, administrators, school committee members, parents and community members about the attributes, experience and knowledge they believe the new superintendent should possess. The focus groups will also provide an opportunity for participants to identify immediate tasks on which the new superintendent should concentrate. "Salamanders and amphibians- on the move" - February 23, 2012 Lawrence Library The Pepperell Conservation Commission & the Nashoba Conservation Trust will sponsor "Salamanders and amphibians- on the move," a presentation by Paula Terrasi and Jeanne Nevard on Thursday, February 23, 6:30 pm, at the Lawrence Library. The public is warmly welcomed to attend. The talk will cover who, what, when, where & why of the spring amphibian movement. Come and learn why these fascinating creatures need our help. This is the exciting time of year when the annual migration of the amphibians will soon be upon us. The talk will cover the who, what, when, where, and why of the vernal amphibian movement. Come and learn why these fascinating creatures need our help. The second half will be a strategy discussion for volunteers to help with salamanders crossing coverage. The need for helpers is often essential to their survival; as they have a high mortality at road crossings. Project Graduation is an all night substance free party held free of charge for the graduates, the evening of graduation.
